Warring youths of Akure and Isolo in Ondo State have signed a peace pact with the state government.
On Tuesday, the youths clashed over the funeral rites of the Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, Afunbiowo 11, who joined his ancestors on Sunday.
Akure youths invaded Isolo, ordering residents to shut their markets as part of the funeral rites, but they were resisted by Isolo youths, who said their community should not be affected.
Funeral rites for the Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, Afunbiowo II, who joined his ancestors on Sunday, began yesterday.
Oba Adesida’s body was placed on the throne and his subjects bade him farewell.
The palace was filled to capacity, as the chiefs led others in prostrating before the king like they did before his passage.
Chairman, Ondo State Council of Obas and Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, on Thursday, denied rumours of his purported death, saying “I am hale and hearty.”
The traditional ruler, who spoke on phone from Atlanta, United States (US), said he was in the United States to attend some functions.
Some traditional rulers in Akure North council in Ondo State yesterday vowed to resist imposition by the Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, following their deposition from their thrones for not obtaining the foremost monarch’s consent of before their installation.
The monarchs said they were appointed as rulers of their domains by the prescribed authorities in Akure North Local Government, adding that they could only be dethroned by the authorities who installed them.
The Olu of Alayere, Prince Adeniran Aladetoyinbo, who spoke on behalf of other traditional rulers in Akure North council, said “it is the person that appointed that can sack. I am not from Akure South but Akure North”.
